Long ago, a cathedral stood at the edge of a forgotten city, its doors opening only after sunset.
No priest served within its walls, no bells hung in its towers, and no prayers were ever spoken beneath its vaulted ceiling. Yet every night, a single bat appeared among the highest arches and watched over those who came seeking refuge.
When the city finally disappeared, the cathedral refused to be abandoned.
Stone arches bent into bones. Rose windows unfolded into wings. Columns became delicate veins, and the last guardian of the sanctuary awakened with the entire cathedral carried upon its body.
Since then, it has rested above doors and upon walls, perfectly still, listening for footsteps in the dark.
It does not frighten away every visitor.
Only those who should never have crossed the threshold.
